What is Structure’s Z-Link Suspension and why should it excite you?

Structure’s patented, proven Without Telescoping Fork (WTF) Suspension System, which debuted on the SCW1 enduro bicycle, proved that a linkage front suspension system pairs perfectly with well-established rear linkage suspension platforms, offers handling benefits (that resulted in race wins in the first week of the bike’s existence), reduces front brake dive, retains more wheelbase under compression, and becomes more stable the harder it is pushed, all of which results in a safer, faster, smoother machine and a more enjoyable riding experience.

WTF Linkage has also proven to be remarkably durable and easy to maintain, with longer service intervals than comparable telescoping forks. However, the frame pocket necessary to house the front shock in the SCW1’s downtube made development of new models difficult – especially for e-bikes, which house batteries in the downtube – and the system as used on the SCW1 was not readily adaptable to a range of new models.

Structure’s design team decided to treat this as an opportunity as the Covid-19 pandemic raged, and made significant improvements to WTF Linkage. For example:

• placement of the shock fully in front of the downtube, which allows for cleaner, more fluid aesthetics and room for batteries in e-bike configurations
• actuation of the shock by means of a rocker driven by a simple push-link from the lower control arm
• shortening of the front arms by approximately 45mm each 
• creation of a modular system that is adaptable to numerous bicycle models at market-friendly price points (starting as low as $2,100 USD)

With these modifications of the original WTF Linkage system, we realized we had something entirely new; an improvement over not only our own WTF Linkage systems, but over every linkage front suspension system ever developed. Structure’s WTF Z-Link suspension platform was born.

During development, it was immediately noted that Z-Link Suspension has application to more than bicycles. Motorcycles, side-by-side all-terrain vehicles, single-rider ATVs, off-road and racing trucks, and even passenger vehicles and sports cars can benefit from key advantages of Z-Link suspension, including:

• longitudinal orientation (bicycles, motorcycles, ski bikes) or transverse orientation (cars, trucks, ATVs, snowmobiles)
• reduced un-sprung weight versus many traditional suspension types
• highly tunable shock leverage ratio throughout the suspension travel, for supple small bump compliance and excellent bottom-out resistance
• greatly improved precision and reduced friction through use of sealed bearings at control arm main pivots
• ease of maintenance; the entire WTF-Z platform can be detached as a completely assembled system from the main vehicle frame via four large bolts and detachment of the steering rod, with advantages for fleet service, field repair, and quick pit stops under racing conditions
• compact packaging; because of the non-linear leverage ratio, and because the shock is driven from both ends and does not attach directly to the vehicle frame, the shock body and spring can be confined roughly to the area between upper and lower control arms
